Ervin Douglas Adkins, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2024, at the age of 84. Born on July 29, 1940, in Wayne, West Virginia, Ervin lived a full life, marked by hard work, love for his family, and a strong connection to his faith.
For many years, Ervin made his living as a forklift driver, embodying the values of dedication and perseverance in everything he did. He and his wife Joyce shared 16 wonderful years of marriage, finding joy in life’s simple pleasures. Together, they loved attending garage sales and auctions, always on the hunt for a good deal. Ervin also took great pride in helping Joyce can fresh vegetables, a tradition that brought them closer and filled their home with warmth.
Ervin was a man of faith, attending Columbus General Baptist Church, where he found solace in gospel music. His deep love for his family and friends was evident in every aspect of his life. He was a cherished father to his children, David (Lisa) Adkins, Patricia (Byron) Barnard, Donnie (Linda) Edwards, Jennifer (Craig) Kiser, and Regina (Greg) Henson. He was also a proud grandfather to Cortney and Jeff Adkins, Megan Willis, Davis Barnard, Jessica Garrett, Steven Anderson, Matt Edwards, Kayla Sturgill, Misty Gray, and Christopher Davis.
Ervin is survived by his devoted wife, Joyce, as well as his brothers Linuel, Larry, Charles Ray, and Harold Gale. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Wanda (Stephens) Adkins, his parents Carl and Lona Adkins, and his brothers Carl Wendell and Pearlie Adkins.
To those who knew him, Ervin was a kind and gentle soul, always willing to lend a hand or share a smile. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love and generosity will endure in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A memorial service will be held on September 2, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Jewell Rittman Funeral Home, 3855 25th Street, Columbus, Indiana, with Pastor Jesse Stephens officiating. Ervin’s final resting place will be at Rest Haven Cemetery, following cremation.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of South Central Indiana, in honor of the compassionate care they provided in Ervin’s final days.
